Piotr Tomaszuk

I was born on July 17th, 1961 in Białystok. In 1984 I graduated from the Department of
 Theatre Studies at The Aleksander Zelwerowicz State Theatre Academy in Warsaw. In 1984 I took up studies at the Department of Puppetry Direction at The Aleksander Zelwerowicz State Theatre Academy in Warsaw – branch in Białystok, from where I graduated in 1987. Between 1986 and 1989 I was employed in The Białystok Puppet Theatre as an assistant and afterwards as an independent director. There was also where I made my debut as an director of children’s shows “On Felix the Physician” and “Roll-a-Pea” to which screenplays I wrote by myself, and an adult performance “The Fox Hunt” by Sławomir Mrożek.

In 1989 I was appointed by the Gdansk’s Governor as an artistic director to the Miniatura Municipal Theatre in Gdansk. I held this post until 1991.

In years 2000-2001 I carried out the function of the Managing and Artistic Director of Banialuka Theatre in Bielsko-Biała and the Director of the XXth International Festival of Visual Arts “Animacje” Bielsko-Biała 2002.

From 2005 until now I have been the artistic manager of Guliwer Theatre in Warsaw. In 1991 I established an independent theater group known as “Wierszalin Society” which was functioning until 2006.

In 2006 I was appointed as Managing and Artistic Director of new founded province council cultural institution – Wierszalin Theatre in Supraśl. In 1996 I founded still existing Wierszalin Foundation.

During my work I cooperated as a lecturer with the State Theatre Universities in Białystok and Wrocław, I steered plant and lectures at the University of Portland (USA), London and Mexico. Frequently I cooperated with Television Theatre during production of  television version of the performances “The Fox Hunt” by Sławomir Mrożek, “Roll-a-Pea” by Piotr Tomaszuk and Tadeusz Słobodzianek, “The Curse” by Stanisław Wyspiański, “The Giant” by Phlipe Dorin, “The Physician” by Piotr Tomaszuk, “Prawiek and Other Times” by Olga Tokarczuk and “The Life of Joseph Nicolas Rej” in Kazimierz Dejmek’s adaptation.

I am the author of screenplays, radio dramas and theatre plays. I was repeatedly rewarded, inter alia in 1994 with The Konrad Swinarski Prize and in 1996 with the Leon Shiller Prize, and also with individual directing awards at the Festival of Polish Contemporary Arts in Wrocław and at the Contests for The Best Performance of Contemporary Polish Drama. Wierszalin Theatre won the prestigious award –the Frige First at the International Theater Festival in Edinburgh for three times (for “Roll-a-Pea”, “Merlin” and “The Physician”), The Grand Prix of  the “Festival Polish Classic Confrontations” in Opole (for “The Curse”), was prized with the diploma of recognition awarded by the Minister of Foreign Affaires of the Republic of Poland for outstanding contribution to the promotion of Polish culture abroad, and awarded by Critics of the Polish Center at the International Theatrical Institue for promotion of  Polish culture abroad in acknowledgment of the values which the activity of the Wierszalin Society brings into the worldwide theatre. In the 2006 I was prized with The Silver Order “Of Merit for Polish Culture Gloria Artis” awarded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
